We talk a lot about what our clothes are made from. Cotton. Polyester. Nylon. Elastane....
But there's another part of the equation we don't talk about nearly enough:
What was used to make them that colour?
From the black leggings you train in to the beautiful pink tank you throw on afterwards, textile dyeing and finishing involves chemistry – and not all processes are held to the same standards... Let’s learn!
Why does your clothing dye even matter?
Your clothes sit against your skin for hours at a time. You sweat in them, move in them, wash them, and wear them again & again.
Depending on the chemicals used in dyeing and processing, potential health concerns can include:
SKIN IRRITATION: Certain textile dyes can trigger irritation, rashes or allergic reactions. And repeated exposure can cause a new allergic response.
HORMONE DISRUPTION: Some chemicals used in textile production have been identified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with your normal hormone function
CARCINOGENIC SUBSTANCES: Certain restricted azo dyes can break down into “aromatic amines” which are classified as carcinogenic
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH: Certain textile chemicals have raised concerns around reproductive health, including fertility and development
So, how do you know what’s safe?
You shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to buy a pair of leggings.
That’s where OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 comes in.
Think of it as an independent safety check for textiles, testing them against a long list of substances that may be harmful to your health.
And it goes beyond just the fabric! Every component of a certified item has to meet the relevant requirements, from the dyes and threads to prints, buttons and trims.
Even better? The closer something sits against your skin, the stricter the requirements.
